Date: September 03, 19891 Type: Boeing 737-200 Registration: - Operator: Varig Where: Sao Palo - Belem (North of Brazil) Report No.: Not Available Report Date: - Pages: - This is not an accident investigation report. Source: Almanaque Abril 1991 This was a nocturnal flight, as reported at the time. It is assumed that the pilot put wrong coordinates in the automatic pilot and the plane followed a completly different route, heading towards the Amazon Forest. This increased the flight time and as a result the planes fuel was running low. The pilot tried to look for (at night) a clearing in a forest to land the plane, he was almost successful. Of 46 passengers and a crew of 6, 14 died and 34 were injured. He still was extremely competent to land in very difficult conditions (at night in a compact forest).
